Des Moines Parks Tour 2016: #10

McHenry Park was such a great surprise on the tour, and the whole family made the trip!

IMG_5129

Once again, I had no idea that this park existed before the challenge. Not only did it have awesome spray features, but it had fun bridges and natural play elements. We barely touched the play ground, because the other areas were more fun to explore.

IMG_5122 IMG_5123

I was surprised at how brave Ben was with the bridges. Maybe it’s because he has stayed up past his bedtime a couple times to watch part of America Ninja Warrior with me – maybe he got inspired.

IMG_5126
There are many reasons why I like my husband. This is one of them.
IMG_5137
IMG_5128

The view from the shelter was spectacular. This was really a great find! If it hadn’t been so close to bedtime, we would have explored a little bit more. Once the 31 are done, I could see us heading back here to check it out!

July 2016 – Fred at 11 Months

Someone recently asked me how old Fred was, and I gasped. It’s currently July. His birthday is in August. I am not ready.

Here’s my happy 11 month old:

IMG_5446IMG_5447

Ben helped me with the photo shoot. I asked him to make Fred laugh by standing behind me. He stood behind Fred instead. Ha!
IMG_5439

Fred is just so sweet. He loves animals and his brother and will crawl as fast as he can to get to them. For some reason, Fred is the only kid that Jackie doesn’t run away from. She’s even let him pet her and pull her tail a little. We separate them right away, but I’m shocked that she’s allowing it. I’m telling you, Fred has a certain charm about him…

IMG_5148IMG_5150

He lacks stranger danger or separation anxiety, which makes my life a lot easier. Yet, he still lights up when he sees me return with the best smile. Fred can really make anyone’s day with his happy face. He is just a cool, chill baby (unless he’s tired….or hungry….)

IMG_4850IMG_5395

The boys have had a breakthrough in their relationship. While Ben still likes Fred to keep his distance, the other day I got to witness them playing on the same toy for multiple minutes. And for the second time ever, Ben wanted to hold Fred. It lasted a squirmy 10 seconds. It was awesome.

IMG_5252IMG_4913

Apparently Fred is following in the footsteps of his brother’s love for anything with wheels. He makes car noises and rolls things around. It’s always a great time in the day for him when his brother actually naps and he gets free reign of the trains!

IMG_5418

And even though their relationship is improving, we still suffer from and delight in the fact that Fred just wants to do everything that Ben is doing.

IMG_5265IMG_5258

We started out the month with a double ear infection and croup. He was the happiest kid at the doctor, but it was a rough afternoon and couple of days…
IMG_4916IMG_4921

Fred can make signs for “more” and “milk” and claps/dances (waves) on command. He also puckers his lips for a “kiss” on command, but I don’t have witnesses for this. He’ll never do it in front of other people. Ha! He is still only threatening to walk, but he is ridiculously fast with crawling and cruising along furniture. The entertainment center had to be blocked, because his mission in life was to constantly clear the movies off of the shelf and do pull ups on the tv stand. He is developing an amazing “will this get me in trouble?” face. The sweet smile that dares me to stop him from climbing the stairs or sticking things in outlets. The other picture features when he busted out of library baby jail.

IMG_4857IMG_5261

Ben has had a breakthrough in his desire to sing songs and tell jokes. He remains a homebody, but he likes outings once he’s out and about. My introverted buddy has an engineer brain. His year was made when Jesse got out the REAL Lego. He loves to design and redesign train tracks, put together puzzles, and figure out how things work. This morning, he ran around the house with a level that had magnets on one side. He made sure things were straight and then announced, “I’m a scientist that looks for metal things! Magnets stick to it!”

IMG_5190IMG_4903

Someday I will be thrilled that he does things for intrinsic value, but it’s super annoying right now. Sticker charts, incentives, and bribery just don’t work well with Ben. He could want something SO BAD, but once I say he can have it as a reward for something, he can totally give up on the idea if he doesn’t like the task. It’s impressive.

Ben is also a creature of habit. He wants the same breakfast everyday – in the same order – on the same spot on the place mat. Orange juice. Oatmeal. Bagel with cream cheese.

IMG_5367
I’m still trying to get Ben interested in drawing and writing without pushing too hard. This is how he completed some pre-writing activities:
IMG_5295
Yet, every now and then, he humors me…
IMG_4953
He is a big helper and likes to be outside (once he agrees to leaving his trains).
IMG_4955

A couple sweet moments: The top picture is when he just suddenly announced, “Take my picture, Momma?” He rarely poses, so this was adorable. The other picture was when I took the boys to Chick-Fil-A, and it was so crowded that I couldn’t put a high chair on the end of the table. Ben sat with perfect manners across from me in a booth by himself like a big boy. When did that happen??

IMG_4917IMG_4960

Other highlights of the last month include:

  • Our parks tour (see separate blog entries – we’re almost done with 31 parks in 31 days!!)
  • We went out for Jesse’s birthday with some friends to see the Mystery Science Theater 3000 reunion show. Zombie Burger and a movie is a guaranteed good time.
  • I continue to get together with friends that I used to teach with for guilty pleasure television. It is a much needed and appreciated weekly treat.
  • 4th of July weekend with my folks, including the Norwalk parade and an anniversary getaway (see separate post about that). Check out how Fred does parades. Play hard, nap hard.
    IMG_5081IMG_1397IMG_5079IMG_5080
  • Play dates, friends, parades, and parks. Summer is the BEST.

It took a good month for my hormones to regulate after weaning Fred. Whew, what a ride. I’ll have to write up a new breastfeeding entry sometime, but that is for another day. Summary: Fed is best – go team! But for now, I’m just enjoying feeling normal again and ridiculously excited and ridiculously sad to put Fred’s baby days behind us. Soaking in this summer before Fred is an actual toddler and Ben is off to preschool!! Wow!

Tour Des Moines Parks 2016: 4-9

The boys were napping, so Jesse held down the fort while Mom and I jumped in the car to track down as many spots as we could in two hours! Thanks, Mom, for being up for an adventure!

Trestle Trail: The Pond
When I parked the car for our first stop, I didn’t realize that the pond needed for our official picture was a MILE away. Oops! At least it was a nice day for the stroll. I’m very thankful that I discovered this fact with my mom instead of the kids!

Many bikers were out and about, and it would be a great place to bike or run.

IMG_5082 IMG_5083 IMG_5084

Westchester Park: Tucked away, north of Hoover High School, is a cute little park in a neighborhood. I will have to bring the boys back here, as the equipment was really good for their ages. There was also a nice shelter for a picnic lunch.

IMG_5089 IMG_5090 IMG_5091 IMG_5092

Northwest Aquatic Center: This is a smaller pool, and we visited on a chilly day. I’m hoping it’s more popular than it appeared, as there were more lifeguards than swimmers, haha. It had all the basic equipment for fun though!

IMG_5086

Waveland Trail: Franklin Garden
As many times as I had been to the library, I never paid attention to the neighboring space that serves as a community garden. What a neat area!

IMG_5095 IMG_5096

Good Park:  The splash area was nice, but this park was pretty spread out without any shade. It had a good view and picnic area.

IMG_5100 IMG_5101 IMG_5102

Woodlawn Cemetery: Once I got over the awkwardness of taking a picture for a contest by a grave, I did appreciate the beauty and history of this location. It took us a solid 15 minutes of driving to find this particular monument. Like I said, Mom was a good copilot on this journey without the boys. 🙂

Tour Des Moines Parks 2016: 3

The third stop on our parks tour was Greenwood Park. We’ve been loving the new splash area at the playground part of this park, but the official challenge led to one of my favorite spots in the world: The Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden.

IMG_5063

IMG_5067

It’s where we got engaged. It was the site of our wedding pictures and a variety of other family pictures. We were happy to make it part of our photo challenge and a quick stop on our anniversary date.

High Trestle Trail Bridge

We took advantage of my parents staying at our house to take a mini staycation for an early anniversary celebration. It was off to Madrid to bike the High Trestle Trail Bridge. After being on our list of things to do for a few years, I was thrilled to check it off. And the adventure did not disappoint. The views were spectacular; it made a great date!

IMG_5032
IMG_5037 IMG_5039 IMG_5042 IMG_5046

Why, yes, we did sing the Jurassic Park theme song…
IMG_5054 IMG_5056

We stayed until the lights came on, but we left before it got too dark.

IMG_5059

We stayed in Ames overnight, which was my first night away from Fred. Whew! I missed our little buddy, but it was pretty awesome knowing that Nina and Papa were going to take care of the Freddy alarm in the morning. 🙂 Jesse slept in, while I went to the hotel lobby and read a book with coffee. Like for real. Without interruptions. There were multiple chapters involved. It was amazing.

We also caught a movie – The BFG. It was a very pretty movie and an enjoyable experience, but I don’t think I would have liked it as much if I hadn’t have read the book first. It was one of my favorite books as a kid, and it was a great adaptation. However, if you didn’t have the background of the book, it would have been a little confusing and odd. But that’s a Roald Dahl story for you!

The grand finale was a belated birthday lunch for Jesse at Hickory Park. An excellent vacation and date with this guy. Happy 6th anniversary!

Tour Des Moines Parks 2016: 1-2

We took on quite the challenge this summer: TourDMParks!

31 Parks in 31 Days. Game on.

The boys are at great ages to do this. Ben (at almost 4) is old enough to be independent on the equipment and young enough to enjoy going to parks all the time. Fred (at 10 months) is old enough to enjoy swings and watch the big kids and young enough to lack the ability to run away – HA!

So far, so good. It has really caused me to branch out of my comfort zone. I tend to stay in central Des Moines and the western suburbs, and most of the challenge is taking me east. I had no idea what I was missing in Des Moines. I will gladly be used as a marketing tool for Des Moines Parks and Rec to gain some knowledge of my city. Here comes the selfies and hashtags!

I was excited to get started and decided to ride the momentum to two parks on the first day!

Sargent Park: What a find! I had no idea this area existed.

Pros: Convenient & clean(ish) potties, close parking, unique and interesting play structures, great views next to a bike trail with prairie flowers, cute design details, water feature

Cons: Some trash in a giant puddle at the end of the only slide, no shade

IMG_4967

While it didn’t have traditional play equipment, there was a surprise at every turn. Bridges, a sun dial, and natural play elements really captured Ben’s attention.

IMG_4969IMG_4980

Unfortunately, the slide to the lower level ended in a giant dirty puddle. And the net bridge was neat, but I feared Ben’s little foot would just slip through. There were also obviously patched places, so I wasn’t too sad when Ben was “too cared” to go across.
IMG_4970 IMG_4972

Speaking of being scared, I tried to get Ben excited about the park by reminding him about the Billy Goats Gruff story. We watched a YouTube video with a very tame troll, and I told him we could act out the story and pretend once we got there. As soon as he saw the bridges, he announced, “Ummm…Mom….I don’t want to ‘tend today…..” My sweet boy.

IMG_4974 IMG_4976 IMG_4978

There were sweet details in the park, including little animal prints in the cement and a neat water feature. Climbing on stumps and through a giant log was great fun. It was a nice morning to see Ben experimenting with the different play elements.

IMG_4993IMG_4984   IMG_4996

And we squeezed in the official picture by the creek access. Sargent Park was a great first stop on the tour!

IMG_4988

Grandview Park: After a short drive, we landed in the middle of a disc golf course. Once again, I had no idea this park existed!

IMG_5006

Pros: Great spray ground area, shaded picnic tables, quiet location with good visibility

Cons: Long walk to the potty, bottle caps/litter, no baby swings

IMG_5008 IMG_5009

My parents were driving into town, so they met us here for a picnic. It was an adorable area with a decent playground. Ben loved the bee hive spray feature, but the water was too chilly for Freddy. This was a great discovery!

Summer Fun – Growing Boys!

Fred is 10 months old! This month was a developmental explosion!

IMG_4759 IMG_4765IMG_4740IMG_4336

  • 2 bottom teeth, 2 top teeth – with a third one popping through
  • The gates are up! In the last few weeks he started pulling himself up to standing and has the ability to climb all 14 stairs to the top floor. He’s threatening to stand unassisted and is a FAST crawler.
  • He claps and raises his arms (BABY POWER!) on command.
  • He consistently sleeps from 7:30-5:30. We try to convince him he’s still tired (by leaving him alone), but he’s super awake and happy. At least he’s happy! This puts his morning nap at 7:30-8 – when Ben is just getting up for the day. He bounces back and forth between 2-3 naps per day, depending on his wake up time.

Ben continues to talk more, use more imagination, and is finally realizing Fred might be fun someday. I will be happy when he pronounces words better, but I am loving the days when things are “over day-er (there)” and we go “uptares” and “downtares”.

Highlights of the month include:

SPLASH PADS! I am loving that Ben can be more independent and Fred likes to sit in one place and splash.

IMG_4310

IMG_4377

National Donut Day!

IMG_4313

If we’re not at the library, zoo, a play date, or park, you can usually find us in our pajamas – playing pirates, Duplo, cars, trains, and pulling books off shelves. Sometimes these are the best days…
IMG_4316  IMG_4371

The biggest event of the month was surprising my parents with my sister & family. They wanted to come in for a cousin’s wedding, so we kept it a secret. Oh, it was awesome. The trip included: fireflies, cousin time, Union Park, the zoo, a sushi double date, wedding/reception, visit to Grandma, and more! I can’t wait to see our Florida family again soon. Now….to plan that vacation…..

IMG_4494 IMG_4495 IMG_4508 IMG_4514 IMG_4526 IMG_4534 IMG_4524IMG_4546 IMG_4555 IMG_4591 IMG_4617

Ben’s naps are spotty. And sometimes hilarious. Who falls asleep in a construction hat!?

IMG_4676

It has been the return of the library visit!! Ben started hating story time when I was pregnant with Fred. Then I had Fred and life happened. We’ve slowly gone back & now it’s one of our favorite outings if we (mostly me) need to get out of the house.

IMG_4748

Fred didn’t love outdoor library art time as much as his brother…

IMG_4693 IMG_4702    IMG_4753    IMG_4755

I feel like I should have so much to write about right now, but I guess I need to jot things down and blog more often to remember everything. So I’ll just leave you with this snapshot of time….one of the only times Ben has willingly held his brother – and that’s because Dad wouldn’t push him if he didn’t share at least once. Ha! Here are my boys – going TO THE MOON!!!

IMG_4736

Do the Zoo! Summer 2016

We continue to be zoo members and I just love it as a half day activity. We can usually breeze through it in 2 hours or less, but this summer they have an exhibit featuring Curious George. Ben spent two hours in there one day, hopping between the activities. He’s just at the perfect age for it. However, I learned that the building they keep it in turns into a sauna when the temperatures climb, so I will have to use my powers of distraction to keep him out of it during the heat of the summer.

In fun news, though, Fred is now allowed out of the stroller to check out the exhibits, and Ben finally likes feeding the goats. “IT TICKLES MY HAND!!”

IMG_4423 IMG_4428 IMG_4429 IMG_4437 IMG_4439 IMG_4453 IMG_4039 IMG_4061 IMG_4071IMG_4470

Don’t Worry, Old Heidi…I’m Appreciating this as Much as I Can.

IMG_4407

The other night I cried.

Okay, so that’s nothing new. I’m 10 months postpartum and weaning my giant baby. I cry a lot.

But this time I just got emotional as I appreciated the pure innocence of my three year old. He was sitting there in his pajamas…..playing with a pirate ship.

At this stage in life:
I know all of his friends.
He tells me everything he’s thinking and feeling.
He doesn’t know any swear words.
He doesn’t know any pop culture lyrics.
A trip to the local zoo is exciting and all the vacation he desires.
He doesn’t know any celebrities other than cartoons.
He doesn’t know anything about politics.
He thinks pirates share and help each other.
He hasn’t had to grieve a death.
It is super obvious when he lies.
His biggest problem is that his brother spits on his toys.

I am soaking up this summer. Before preschool, other kids that I don’t know, and teachers. Before he’s really a big kid instead of just saying he’s a big kid.

I am in love with this time in our lives and am really trying to enjoy the ride. I know it is just a moment in time, so I’m keeping this childhood innocence thing going as long as I can. If you need me, I’ll be having a parent-child conference in my office. (Yes, we both fit in here. That won’t last long either!!)

My Postpartum Hair: A Tribute

There was an 8 month span of time a while after Ben was born where my hair turned to sticky grossness. It looked like I hadn’t washed it in weeks. After drying it for 20 minutes, it would still feel wet. I tried everything, I googled everything, and I consulted several hair people. I couldn’t find any good answers. I resigned myself to the idea of wearing a ponytail for the rest of my life. The only thing that would temporarily fix things would be a professional scrub with stripping shampoo or using hair dye to shock it back to normal. Yet, within two days, it would start going back to gross.

140112-01 140105-03

And then one day, it just lifted. So weird. Hormones are insane, as that was the only explanation I could come up with.

So after Fred was born, I didn’t worry when my hair turned to this:

IMG_1972

I just took my life lesson of humility and knew I had to wait it out. Meanwhile, I could just enjoy all the hairs growing back in from when all my pregnancy hair fell out. HA.

IMG_4393

And one day, after about 9 months, I woke up and it was back. I could run my hands through my hair and have them come out dry. It coincided with less nursing and intentionally adding more protein into my diet, but really…..hormones are just weird.

IMG_1973

And now if you hear of this happening to anyone, you can say, “Hey! I knew a girl that went through that!” Because you can find lots of hair loss after pregnancy posts, but you can’t find much information on “after birthing babies my hair turns into a sticky mess”. So here you go, Internet. It happens.

So, thank you, postpartum hormones, for helping me appreciate my normal hair. I’ve learned my lesson….please leave me alone. Whew!
